| Ode to Spring |
|
Every year Spring returns, and every year I am awestruck by the depth to which it nourishes my soul. It is a feeling which completely escapes me in the depths of winter. When bitter cold and darkness reign, it is as if Spring never existed. When warm winds blow and lush green fills the landscape, I don’t want to look back for an instant. I can appreciate all of the seasons for one reason or another, but it is only the Spring which can bring such relief. This piece began as an exercise in writing a piece in the classic sonata form, but as it progressed I was inspired by the idea of growth and renewal tempered by the unexpected. The music is grand yet dignified, restrained yet emotional. The form is classic yet surprising. I know Spring will return, and yet again I will be in awe. |
