| Je rêve d'elle |
|
Given the lyrical, improvisational nature of the melodies, the free form, the compound and sequenced harmonies with sudden shifts in tonal center (not to mention of course the French title), this piece can best be described as “Impressionistic Jazz.” In fact, this piece began as an improvisation that stayed in my mind (and my fingers) for several years. The longer it stayed with me, the more I knew I wanted to eventually commit it to paper. It was the first few measures that originally came as an improvisation, music inspired by the unconscious. An impression of a daydream, with echoes of distant sarabandes. An idle afternoon on a hilltop of clover. Autumn leaves and wedding bells. Je rêve d’elle. |
